Out-of-the-box, all WordPress Posts and Pages include a "Featured Image" field.
Generally, for a customized theme, only use this field when instructed to.
For off-the-shelf WordPress themes, this field is used for the thumbnail shown in most teaser layouts of said content (ie. a blog archive or category page, search results).
